300% rise in operating expenses will make Tariffs hike unavoidable- Airtel
The Churf Executive officer of Airtel Nigeria , Dinesh Balsingh has emphasizes that a staggering 300% increase in operating expenses makes a rise in tariffs unavoidable.
In a statement on Monday , Dinesh also commented that the significant increase of 300 percent in operational costs over the past 18 to 24 months has compelled the need for tariff adjustments. According to him , the changes are essential for ensuring the long-term viability of the telecom industry.
He emphasized that tariffs have not changed in more than ten years, even though operating costs have risen considerably during that time.
Nigerian telecommunications companies have presented their request for a full 100 percent increase in tariffs to the Nigerian Communications Commission, which oversees the country’s telecom industry.
He said, “For over a decade, tariffs have remained static despite the dramatic increase in operating expenses, which have surged by over 300 per cent in the last 18 to 24 months alone.
“To continue providing high-quality services and meeting the growing demand for digital connectivity, it has become essential to realign our pricing structure with economic realities.
“The increasing demand for digital services requires us to continually upgrade our networks. These investments come at a cost, one that must be shared proportionally to guarantee long-term viability.
“By enabling us to expand coverage, strengthen network security, and introduce cutting-edge technologies, these adjustments will directly enhance the quality of connectivity for Nigerians. Our priority is to ensure that no one is left behind in the country’s digital transformation journey.”
