The House of Representatives on Wednesday asked the Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC to advise the House on the issues of illegality surrounding the creation of the commission’s Interim Committee.
Recall that barely five hours after the Senatei Committee on Niger Delta finished screening President Muhamnadu Buhari’s nominees, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio inaugurated an interim committee without a time frame to run the commission’s affairs.
This development was based on a motion entitled:’Urgent Need to Stop The Illegality In The NDDC’, promoted by Hon Ossai Nicholas Ossai, PDP, Delta.
Ossai in his submission said” the law establishing the commission provides in Section 8 of NDDC Act that, its management shall be the responsibility of its Governing Board.
He explained that”the Governing Board of the commission includes the chairman, the managing director and the other members with powers to manage and supervise the affairs of the Commission making rules and regulations for effective functioning of the commission.
“Concerned that on the 29th of October after the Senate Committee in Niger Delta had screened the president’s nominees and in same day the minister of Niger Delta Affairs inaugurated an interim committee to midwife the commission’s forensic audit for 18years.
He further stressed that the speed and curiousity with which the minister hurriedly set up a 3-man Interim Committee is stunning and suspicious.
In his prayers, Ossai demanded that the appointment of the interim Committee should be withdrawn, advised the Senate to discontinue attending to the budget process of the commission and urged the House Committee to do same.
Sensing the danger to allow a debate on the issue, the presiding officer, Femi Gbajabiamila quickly referred the matter to its Committee on Niger Delta for advise on the matter.
