The Federal Government announced on Wednesday that it has commenced the distribution of 42,000 metric tons of various grains as a component of its relief assistance to the citizens of Nigeria.
The news about the grains being bagged for distribution was shared by the Presidency two weeks ago.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, told reporters at the State House that the distribution process has already started, following the Federal Executive Council meeting at Aso Rock Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.
In response to the country’s food crisis and increasing commodity prices, President Bola Tinubu decided to release 102,000 metric tons of different grain types from the Strategic Reserve and the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria on February 8th.
“We are distributing to state capitals in the first instance as you all are aware of the risk involved in the vandalisation of foodstuff, so we are working with the office of the National Security Adviser and other national security agencies.
“Distribution has commenced however, I will not want to comment on the security aspect of the distribution.
“I can assure you that we have started distributing in the northwestern states, and we are distributing out of seven points,” he said.
