Chelsea defeat Tottenham in seven-goal thriller as Arsenal drop points
Cole Palmer scored a brace of penalties as Chelsea came from two goals down to defeat Tottenham 4-3 in their English Premier League (EPL) at the London Stadium on Sunday.
Tottenham capitulated at home after a bright start, Jadon Sancho lifting Chelsea before Palmer took the seven-goal London derby by the scruff of the neck in the second period.
Tottenham had capitalised on two Chelsea errors to take a two-goal lead early on, with Dominic Solanke tucking into the net on five minutes following a slip by Marc Cucurella.
Dejan Kulusevski made it 2-0 after another Cucurella slip, squeezing in a shot at the near post to double the advantage six minutes later.
The Blues recovered to half the deficit through Jadon Sancho’s low shot from the edge of the area that sneaked in for 2-1. Both sides had chances to score further goals, but Spurs settled for a narrow lead at the interval.
Chelsea came out flying in the second half and were awarded a penalty when Yves Bissouma brought down Moises Caicedo in the area, and Palmer calmly slotted home for 2-2 on 61 minutes.
The former Manchester City youngster was heavily involved as Enzo Fernandez volleyed in from the edge of the area for 3-2 before netting another penalty- an exquisite Panenka- on 84 minutes to seal all three points for Chelsea. The 22-year-old has converted all 12 penalties attempted in the EPL, breaking Yaya Toure’s 100% penalty conversion rate of 11 attempts.
Heun-Min Son scored a late consolation for Tottenham in the sixth minute of added time but Chelsea held on victory that sees Enzo Maresca’s side take sole possession of second place with 31 points from 15 matches, cutting Liverpool’s lead at the top to four points albeit with a game more played.
Earlier, Alex Iwobi played all 90 minutes for Fulham as the Cottagers held Arsenal, his former club, to a 1-1 draw, denting the Gunners’ title ambitions. The draw moved third-placed Arsenal to within six points of leaders Liverpool, having played a game more. Wilfred Ndidi played 52 minutes as Leicester City scored two late goals to snatch a point in their 2-2 draw against Brighton.
