The Office of the Public Defender (OPD) has assured residents of the government’s determination to protect and safeguard their fundamental human rights as entrenched in the relevant sections of the Constitution.
This was made known in Lagos by the Director, Lagos State Office of the Public Defender (OPD), Mrs. Olayinka Adeyemi during the sensitisation and enlightenment campaign of members of the public at Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area.
According to Adeyemi, many people’s rights have been violated due to lack of access to justice, ignorance and poverty while continued violation had amounted to injustice, inequality and social imbalance with attendant consequences on national development.
The Director reiterated that OPD was established to provide free legal services to the residents, irrespective of gender and religion with zonal offices also created in the five divisions of Lagos to cater for indigent people.
She, therefore, urged members of the public to take full advantage of the free legal services of OPD to avoid oppression and victimisation by their neighbours or other residents.
Recall that Office of the Public Defender began a series of enlightenment and sensitisation programmes to stem the tide of rights violation and other forms of abuse across the State
