… Hands Over Illicit Items to NDLEA
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Area Command, has intercepted a large consignment of Cannabis Indica weighing 51.25kg with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N256,250,000.
Addressing newsmen at the command on Wednesday, 18 September 2024, the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Joy Edeldouk, disclosed that the items intercepted on 11 September 2024 were made by her officers working closely with the NDLEA.
She noted that the act violates the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 provision, section 55 sub-sections 1c and 1f.
She said, “This interception is a testament to our continued dedication and commitment to safeguarding our borders from importing illicit and harmful substances. The negative impact of drugs such as cannabis indica on individuals, families, and society at large ranges from destruction of lives, increase in crime, fueling violence, and other societal vices.”
Comptroller Edeldouk stressed the dangers of illegal substances, particularly to the youths, and warned against testing the resolve of the Nigeria Customs Service.
“I would like to take this opportunity to send a strong and clear warning to all unscrupulous importers who may be contemplating testing the resolve of the Nigeria Customs Service. Let it be known that we are unwavering in our duty to protect the integrity of our borders and will not hesitate to bring those involved in illegal importation to justice.”
The illicit substances were later handed over to representative of the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution.
Receiving the items, Fintian Bassey, commander of narcotics, Tincan Strategic Command, reaffirmed that the agency would continue to work with the NCS in the interest of the country to rid the nation of illicit drugs and drug abuse.
