Members of the House of Representatives have unanimously decided to reduce their salaries by half for a period of six months as a demonstration of solidarity and shared sacrifice with the Nigerian people who are currently experiencing economic challenges and food insecurity.
After an amendment to a motion’s prayer proposed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu, @OfficialBenKalu the House recommended that lawmakers contribute 50% of their monthly salary of N600,000 to assist Nigerians during these challenging times.
Kalu’s revised prayer was influenced by a proposal put forth by Rep Isiaka Ayokunle, urging advocates of the upcoming nationwide protests to abandon the plan and instead initiate discussions with the government.
The deputy Speaker mentioned that the salary reduction will aid in supporting the federal government’s initiatives to combat the increasing prices of food items in the country, aiming to alleviate the difficulties faced by Nigerians.
