FG terminates contracts for Obajana-Benin highway

The federal government has decided to cancel the road expansion contracts that were given to Mothercat Ltd, Dantata & Sawoe Construction Ltd, and Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) Ltd for specific parts of the Obajana-Benin highway.

The government also cautioned that any contract that receives funding but does not meet performance expectations will be subject to similar repercussions.

The discontinuation of contracts 6136 (Mothercat Ltd), 6137 (Dantata & Sawoe Construction Ltd), and 6138 (RCC Ltd) by the federal government has impacted the progress of the Obajana-Benin road dualization in specific areas:
section II (Okene-Auchi) in Kogi/Edo State, section III (Auchi-Ehor) in Edo State, and section IV (Ehor-Benin) in Edo State.

As per the statement from Minister of Works David Umahi, the cancellation of the contracts was deemed essential due to substantial project delays and the contractors’ non-compliance with their contractual duties as outlined in the Standard Conditions of Contract.

The Minister pointed out that these violations delayed the projects and ultimately caused the contracts to expire due to the passing of time.

In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media Uchenna Orji, the Minister has instructed the responsible engineers to promptly access the site and the ongoing projects and assume control from the affected companies.

He said, “He warns that the Federal Ministry of Works  under his watch  will not condone acts of unseriousnes and sabotage by  contractors whose plan is to become a clog in the wheel of  progress  of the Renewed Hope administration which is determined to change the ugly narrative of Nigeria’s road infrastructure.

“He further  warns  that going forward, the government will not hesitate  in terminating all projects  that are funded but are non-performing.”
