Lagos Govt. begins demolition of ‘shanties erected on drainage setback
The Lagos state government has commenced the demolition of “shanties erected on drainage setback” in Gbagada and Bariga.
On Sunday, the state government gave owners of the structures 48 hours to vacate the areas.
The demolition follows the flooding of July 3, which left millions of residents stranded.
In a post on X, Tokunbo Wahab, commissioner of environment and water resources, said the demolition will curb flooding in the state.
“Following the expiration of a removal notice to owners of shanties beside Bariga-Gbagada Drainage Channel, operatives of the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance department from Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources @LasgMOE Wed commenced the removal of all the shanties on the drainage setback to stem the incident of flooding,” Wahab said.
