LAGOS SAFETY COMMISSION SEALS NIGHTCLUBS, EVENT CENTRES

Lagos State Safety Commission over the weekend sealed no fewer than 11 facilities including event centres, lounges and night clubs for contravening COVID-19 protocols and directives during a monitoring exercise carried out by the agency.

Speaking on the operation, the Director-General of the Commisson, Mr. Lanre Mojola, stated that some of the sealed event centres had previously sought permission from the agency to organise parties and events, but the number of guests the officials met during inspection visits to the locations outnumbered what they got approval for.

“This necessitated the sealing of the facilities for non-compliance with COVID-19 Health Protection Regulations and Protocols in line with the State and Federal Governments’ directives”, Mojola said.

Mojola, who was represented during the exercise by Dr. Wale Adeboje, the Events Safety Administrator in the Commission, disclosed that the facilities sealed included UBC Club, Victoria Garden Centre; Sapearz Lounge, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi; Bravo Event Centre, Ogba; Ronite Event Centre, Iju Road, Agege; All Season Event Centre, Ipaja; Carabana Lounge and Bar, Isolo Ajao Estate; DNA Victoria Island; Twist Lounge on Kofo Abayomi Victoria Island; Carlsbad Lounge, Adeniyi Jones Ikeja and Darts Event Centre, Grammar School, Ifako Ijaiye, Lagos.

While maintaining that the facilities were sealed for non-compliance with the Event Safety Clearance that was issued, he emphasised that the Safety Commission will continue to monitor and enforce compliance across the State, warning that all the COVID-19 violators will be summoned to the Commission’s office in Alausa for further directives.

His words: “Some of the event centres sealed were given approval for 50 guests inside and 150 guests outdoor but to our surprise when we visited, they had more than 150 guests inside and more than 200 guests with some of the guests without facemasks and sanitisers. This is in total contravention of all safety rules and protocols”.

The Director-General, therefore, urged Events Centre owners not only to register and obtain the necessary permit on www.lasgsafetyreg.com, but to also ensure that the terms of approval are strictly adhered to. He also implored all residents to observe the laid down safety guidelines and regulations in line with the State and Federal Government directives.
