The Lagos State Government has called for the support of Women on Peace and Security across the State in order to realise the objectives of the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda, especially in the area of Security and Governance.
Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Cecilia Bolaji Dada made the call on Thursday while speaking at the Annual workshop on Women’s Peace and Security held at the Prestige Catering and Hotels in Ikeja.
The awareness workshop, according to the Commissioner, was organised annually to sensitise the armed security personnel about the need to promote gender equality and women participation in decision-making, which is a key goal of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.
She explained that the State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, joined the rest of the world to sensitise security personnel on the need to align with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325), which reaffirms the importance of equal participation and involvement of women in all processes of peace keeping, conflict resolution, and management within their environment.
Dada observed that the State is proactively encouraging women to engage in political, social and economic growth activities as a way of contributing their quota to national development and general wellbeing of all residents.
The Commissioner underscored the roles of security personnel in having a peaceful State, describing them as respected figures in the society.
In her words, “Collaborating with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation will further ensure the prevention of conflict and all forms of violence against women and girls as well as institute a system for preventing violence and disaster.
Other plans that would be introduced to aid the cause of women, the Commissioner said, would include institutionalising a plan to strengthen the Women’s Political Trust fund, technical capacity building activities and provisions for enhanced cooperation with civil society.
