NAFDAC shutdown illegal alcohol production factory in Lagos

The National Agency For Food And Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has uncovered unauthorised production facilities producing and distributing various brands of alcoholic beverages at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos.

In a statement on Thursday, the agency said its investigation and enforcement directorate, acting on credible intelligence, discovered the facilities operating within shop 34, shop 17/24, and attachment 17/2 in the Niger 4 Plaza of the complex.

NAFDAC said its operatives found “mini plastic mixing tanks, improvised filters, cartons of empty bottles with intact labels, corks, packaging materials, and assorted already produced and packaged drinks”.

“Over 3,452 cartons of empty and filled bottles, valued at over two hundred and fifty million naira (₦250 million), were seized and evacuated from the location,” the statement reads.

“NAFDAC urges the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office, send an email to reforms@nafdac.gov.ng or call 0909 763 0506 and 0909 763 0507 (9 am – 5 pm).”

In a similar operation earlier this month, NAFDAC sealed two water-packaging factories in the Otta area of Ogun state.

Philip Benu, the NAFDAC state coordinator, had said the two companies failed to meet the agency’s requirements for registration.

Benu said the facilities of the two companies were earlier in the year placed on hold with the NAFDAC seal when they were found operating without approval.
