Nigeria’s Government has formally submitted an extradition request to the Finnish government for Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafran agitator accused of inciting unrest and promoting terrorism and secessionist agendas within the country.
This move is part of Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to address Ekpa’s activities, which have been deemed a threat to national security.
Speaking on Channels TV, Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, confirmed the submission of the extradition request, stating that all necessary documentation and legal requirements have been forwarded to Finland for review.
“Well, I’m sure he’s cooling off somewhere,” General Musa said, referring to Ekpa’s arrest. “Legal action will be taken accordingly. I don’t want to say too much, but I’m glad he’s been arrested”
Ekpa was arrested by Finnish authorities in November 2024, along with four others, on suspicion of involvement in terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism.
The Lahti District Court in Finland ordered Ekpa’s remand based on probable cause for public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Government is desperate to have Ekpa extradited due to his alleged role in promoting separatist propaganda and violently advocating for the secession of southeastern Nigeria.
Ekpa has been accused of using social media to incite unrest and promote terrorism, which has led to concerns about national security and stability.
The extradition request is seen as a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to address the activities of Ekpa and other separatist groups.
The Nigerian Government is hopeful that the Finnish government will grant the extradition request, allowing Ekpa to face trial and justice in Nigeria
