Ojodu Tragedy:Police says two (2) killed as FRSC denies involvement
The Lagos State police command said two students lost their lives yesterday not thirteen (13) as being speculated in an accident involving a DAF truck with Registration No. APP 438 YA driven by one Bolaji Kabiru ‘
Eye witnesses account said the Truck had brake failure and subsequently rammed into some students of Bab Fafunwa Millennium School, Ojodu killing and injuring some.
In a statement released by Lagos Police Command’s spokesman, CSP Adekunle AJISEBUTU, two male students died immediately the truck rammed into them while several other sustained serious injuries
He said “As a result of the accident, two males died on the spot, seven females and five males totalling twelve victims sustained varying degrees of injuries. Traffic personnel from the Motor Traffic Department of the Ojodu Police Division immediately visited the scene. Corpses of the dead students (identity not yet known) were evacuated with the support of officers of the FRSC and were deposited at the Morgue of the Mainland Hospital, Yaba, for autopsy.
The injured victims were taken to God’s Apple City Hospital, Ojodu Berger; St. Michael Hospital, Ojodu; and the Lagos State Emergency Hospital, Toll Gate.
The erring driver has been apprehended and kept in police custody. However, the angry students who were later joined by hoodlums set the accidented vehicle ablaze. ”
In a related development, the Lagos State command of the Federal road safety commission (FRSC) has denied being responsible for the accident that occurred.
A press release made available to Press men and signed by Route Commander Olabisi Sonusi, the FRSC Public Education Officer said the general public should disregard the disgruntled information been circulated by some unscrupulous element that FRSC men caused the crash.
According to him the men of FRSC were instead called upon by passersby to help intervene after the crash had happened
“An articulated truck was said to have lost control at Grammar School Bus stop along Ogunnusi road, Lagos today Tuesday 7th December, 2021 which caused the death of unverified number of students and leaving many injured.
About seven (7) of the victims were rescued and immediately taken to Lagos State Emergency Centre Ojota by FRSC personnel while another road user helped in carrying about seven (7) also to the same emergency centre.
We want to place on record that our men were not in any way involved in the cause of the crash as patrol activities was not ongoing along that axis as at the time of the crash.”
Meanwhile, normalcy has since returned to the area as the men of RRS are on ground with their vehicles to prevent any form of anarchy and breakdown of law and order.
