Police have arrested a 22 year old woman in Gowan Estate,Lagos for drowning her baby with a bucket of water.
The suspect, Adisa Funmilola who did not show any sign of remorse, boldly admitted to have killed her baby.
“I drowned her because she deprived me of realising my dream of becoming a lawyer. I drowned my baby inside a bucket filled water and reported myself at the Gowon estate police division Monday.” She confessed.
According to her, after reporting herself at the station no police officer went back with immediately but when they did, they found the dead baby inside the bucket.
“I was impregnated by a boy who attended same JAMB lessons with me but he rejected the pregnancy. I wanted to abort the pregnancy but my father said no. I passed my JAMB and was offered admission to study Law at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, but I had to differ the admission because of the baby.
I also wanted to take her to the orphanage home which was difficult and I live with my sister who has no job and I am also not working. I felt there was no use keeping a year and six month old baby since I could not take care of her.” Funmilayo explained.
Her elder sister who did not want her name mentioned, said she was too shocked to believe that her sister could commit such act.
“I suspect she is gradually developing mental problem because of her strange behavior at times. Our mother had same mental problem before she died. We live in the same apartment but have our separate bedrooms and didn’t know when she drowned the baby.” Suspect sister said in tears.
The suspect has been taken to the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja where the Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu after being briefed, directed that she should be transfered to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department , SCIID, Yaba.
Meanwhile, a police source hinted that medical checks would be conducted on the suspect to know her mental state.
