Referee Beaten to a coma in a Nigeria league match

A Nigerian football referee, Ms Patience Nweke on Saturday survived what could have been a tragic moment in Nigeria football history after she was attacked by players in the match involving J Atete Football Club of Warri, Delta State and Ekiti United Football Club of Ekiti State.

According to report, players of Nigeria National League (NNL) club side, J. Atete on Saturday evening beat the female referee, Patience Nweke from Imo state to a state of coma

According an eyewitness who spoke to Blueprint, the players playing their trade with the club went gaga after they lost at home to visiting Ekiti United.

The eyewitness said, “After the game which the home team lost, the players rushed her, gave her several punches on the breast before she collapsed on the field and rushed to hospital.

“Her state of health unknown though reports have it that Julius Atete has rushed to the hospital to see what happened.”

Police and officials of NNL, the country’s second tier football league are yet to comment on the latest development.
