The House of Representatives on Tuesday directed Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to stop its policy on the usage of National Identification Number (NIN) for prospective applicants till 2021 to allow for more registration by candidates.
This was sequel to a motion promoted by Hon Zainab Gimba (APC, Borno) While leading the debate, she submitted that it was necessary for JAMB to review the timeline as earlier scheduled pending when the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) would establish more centres across the country.
Hon Sada Soli from Katsina (APC) in his contribution, hailed JAMB for it initiative which he said would go a long way to curb malpractice but the time was too sudden that it could lead to many Nigerians been disenfranchised.
Hon Aliyu Magaji, APC, Jigawa said “most Nigerians live in rural areas and as such the said policy by JAMB would affect them because not everyone is able to register for NIN”. Hon Sartomi Ahmed who also supported the motion decried the cumbersome process in getting a NIN number and suggested for outright cancellation of the policy. The matter was referred to the committee on Basic Education for immediate legislative action. The presiding officer in Tuesday was Hon Femi Gbajabiamila.
